If tap water is running during a 20-sec handwash, it will use 1.5 to 2 L of freshwater on average. That means if we follow the latest instructions relative to COVID-19 and frequently wash our hands (and we should), we will use an additional 15 to 20 litres of water every day. A family of 4 will need 80 litres of water daily and Hong Kong will use an extra 160 000 000 L of water each day or the equivalent of 160 Olympic-sized swimming pools of water daily.
Indeed, washing our hands is necessary to stop the spread of COVID-19 so what can we do? If we want to continue to act responsibly against the virus without sacrificing Mother Nature and depleting our water resources excessively in the process, here is the lifehack!
Please turn off the tap water when rubbing your hands with soap.
To be a hero over this difficult time, not only can you stay at home to support frontline medical community but you can persuade family members and colleagues to take up this lifehack and help save water.
